Our Roots

The Good News Welfare Society (GNWS) was founded by Rev. Fr. Jacob P.J The Good News Welfare Society's Arts and Commerce First Grade College came to be established in June 1986. This institution is recognized by the Govt. of Karnataka as an aided institution and affiliated to Karnataka University Dharwad. University Grants Commission New Delhi recognized the college under Rule 2 (f) and 12 (b) of the UGC Act as also NAAC by awarding "B" grade to the Institution.

At the persistent requests from the then Chairman Fr. Jacob, Bro. Mathew Pannathanath the then Provincial Superior in consultation with the provincial Council decided to have a feasibility study to take over and own the entire Society and its Institutions. Consequently Bro. Abraham Pralel was appointed to study the viability of the project in the year of 1998 to 1999. He in turn after studying, the pros and cons of the project submitted a report which was accepted by the provincial and his council. Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel, Louis Villa, Yercaud, Salem dist became the sole owners of the society during the year 2000.

The present Management of the College consists of Educationists of high standing which includes Br. K.J. George as President/Chairman and Provincial Superior of Yercaud Province of Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel Yercaud - DT: Salem T. N. and Br. Sabu Joseph its Secretary. All the other members belong to various Religious congregations and all of them are educationists and administrators of repute.

Good News Welfare Society's Arts and Commerce First Grade College Kalghatgi.

This college offers under graduate degree courses in Arts and Commerce streams. With experienced staff, Library/ Labs and one of the leading colleges of the district is affiliated to Karnataka University and accredited by NAAC at "B" level. Over the years it has changed the education scenario and its attainment which is unparallel. In terms of educational achievement many of our students have been awarded Gold Medals and have secured Ranks in various disciplines by Karnataka University. We are active participant in sports and games discipline of Karnataka University. 90% of the faculty members are engaged in Research Projects funded by University Grant Commission, New Delhi. The annual result in Arts and Commerce disciplines are always above 98% with majority of students placed in distinction. This achievement is attributed to the untiring efforts of Brothers of St. Gabriel.

Description of the Logo

The words 'Mrityorma amritangamaya' from 'death to life' remind us that we have life and have it in its fullness. "One who believes in me, even if he dies, he shall live" said Jesus.

1) OUR VISION -- Development of "Human potential".

2) OUR MISSION -- is "a harmonious development of our students through quality education".

Location: The college is located at equidistance from Dharwad, the District Head Quarters the twin cities - Hubli and Dharwad within Dharwad as Hubli. It is 30 Kms away from both these cities. Frequent Buses are available. The nearest rail stations are Hubli and Dharwad. The nearest aerodrome is Hubli.

Being located on a hilltop the college is surrounding by green vegetation. This provides a treat to the eyes. The campus is peaceful and there is no single case of ragging through out its history.

The campus provides for a stimulating life style. It is conducive to academic pursuits and it encourages student leadership and governance. The campus always brims with several activities such as games, sports, cultural activities, seminars, group discussions, and NSS Activities. The campus has more than 1000 trees and other botanical and herbal plants. We have a conservation authority which is working to save the existing plants and to plant more Trees.

The college provides pollution free Atmosphere.

INFRASTRUCTURE:

Library:

(i) A well equipped library is an asset to any educational Institution. We have a large number of books can be mentioned on various subjects including encyclopedias on various subjects.

(ii) We subscribe to more than 50 journals, periodicals and magazines, English and Kannada dailies

(iii) The entire library service is computerized. The library is further equipped with internet/fax and Xerox facilities. UGC funded Book Bank is an additional attraction.

(iv) Internet Library

(v) The reading hall is well furnished and can accommodate more than 100 students. Lending library facility is provided to poor students and it does.

COUMPUTER LABORATORY:

The computer lab has well furnished been wide be appreciated by the public, parents and higher officials of the Department of Higher education. The students are provided basic computer education. The lab provides broad band Internet facility.

CANTEEN:

In the campus provides essential eateries to both the staff and students. Hygienically maintained canteen is an attraction to teachers and students.

CONFERENCE HALL:

The college has a spacious conference hall, which can accommodate more than 800 students. This hall occupies a primordial place in the life of students, teachers and parents for group discussions/meetings/ cultural activities/functions of various clubs. This hall is utilized by the lawyers, Tahasildar for govt. meetings, seminars election, and other programmes of the Govt. this provides an opportunity for the students to get involved in activities besides academics.

HOSTEL FACILITIES:

We have well furnished hostels, separately for boys and girls managed respectively by Brothers of St. Gabriel and Montfort Sisters of Wisdom. Both the hostels have student representatives as the entire expenditure is divided equally and hostilities are provided counseling facilities - and sports facilities etc.

COUNSELLING CENTRE.

Counselling Centre is set up in the college with qualified faculty members under the Leadership of Br. Sabu Joseph, who has a Masters degree in counselling from Bangalore University and he attends to the counselling needs of the students.

SCHOLARSHIPS.

Scholarships are available from following sources.

3. Management Instituted scholarships. and besides.
4. The following Cash prizes are given every year :

i) Prof Smt. Aliakutty P.A., Principal, cash prize is given to the student, who secures the highest marks in Economics at the final year examinations of the Degree course.

ii) Prof. Anita Bhat, Associate Professor, cash prize is given to the student, who tops the college in History.

5. Gold Medal: Dr. B.G. Biradar and Ms. Shantala Nayak, Associate Professors of the Dept. of Kannada Gold Medal is given to the student, who secures highest marks in Kannada at the Degree level.

PLACEMENT AND CAREER GUIDANCE CELL

The placement cell, with the assistance of UGC, regularly imparts coaching to students to prepare them for competitive examinations KPSC/UPSC, Banking and Railway Examination.

Guidance in setting up small scale business establishments is provided to the students.

ALUMINI AND PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION

The Past Students Association meets every year to take up stock of the achievements and to make further suggestions for the improvement of the college.

The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) meets once a year and the suggestions emanating from it are taken into account while formulating the programmes and policies of the college.

The College has, in order to inculcate team sprit and self esteem, constituted the following clubs and they are active in the concerned fields:

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)

NSS volunteers of the college engage themselves in constructive works such as Leadership training/Vanamahotsva, entrepreneurial training/NSS work, etc. These activities are voluntarily carried out by the NSS volunteers.

SPORTS AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The College has spacious playgrounds with facilities like 200 metres track, Volleyball court, Football field, Tennikoit, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Badminton .Many of our students take Part in the University level and State level Competations and come out in flying colours with Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. Besides these, indoor games facilities are provided to the students.

Good News Welfare Society's Arts and Commerce Pre-University College:

It is one of the prestigious colleges imparting Pre-University education in this part of Karnataka with high, pass percentage. This college is in existence for more than twenty five years. After the Brothers took over, the admissions are full and the results in the final examinations are amazing. The infra-structure is one of the best and the computer lab is the pride of the college and the envy of neighbouring colleges.

These courses are recognized Diploma Courses of Two year's duration have helped hundreds of poor youth to find a decent living. These students have even found placement in multi-National companies.

OM MARIA PRASANNA GRIHINI TRAINING CENTRE:

We get more than three hundred applications for this one year course in training for the young girls and victims of child marriage widows. Here, these poor girls are trained in their duties as mothers. They are given special training in Home Nursing, First Aid, Cooking and Nutrition, Home management, Adult Literacy, Tailoring and Embroidery, Kitchen Gardens, Harvesting, Horticulture, Bio-Fertilizing, Florists Training, Animal Husbandry, Poultry and Social Life. This is a free training program. At the end of the course they are given a Tailoring Machine free of cost.

Good News Welfare Society's Driving School:

The only one of its kind in the Thaluka of Kalaghtagi, many unemployed youth take the opportunity to equip them for employment. The Regional Transport Office Dharwad Dist. Visit the locality for test driving and issue of driving licenses once a month. This facility is available only in our institute in the entire district.
