HISTORY

MONTFORT TECHNICAL INSTITUTE

St. Thomas Mount, Chennai 600 016.

Montfort Technical Institute was started at Alandur in Madras, now called Chennai in1964 by the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel at the invitation of the late Archbishop of Madras- Mylapore Dr. Louis Mathias was its founder and Principal was Rev. Bro. Zephrin. The buildings and, installation of the machines were completed by 1969. the power connection was made in 1970.

Rev. Bro. Mathew Pannathanath took over as Director and, Principal in 1970. Job orders were taken from industries around Chennai. The first batch of 22 trainees were recruited for the Turner trade in 1971. In order to give better employment prospects to the trainees, the institute applied for Government Recognition from the National Council For Vocational Training (NCVT) in 1973. The first batch of 4 Turners and, 6 Welders appeared for the All India Trade Test of Craftsmen (NCVT) in 1974.

In the mean while, there was request from the people of the place for more trades. Since the land at Alandur was not enough to have more trades, a new site was needed. A plot of land was acquired in St. Thomas Mount in Chennai and, construction was started at the site.

Rev. Bro. Joseph Kottoor took over as Director and, Principal in 1978. The construction at the new site was completed and Machinist , Electronics Mechanic trades were added in 1982.

Rev. Bro. Albert Selvaraj took over as Director and Principal in 1984. Draughtsman Civil trade was added in 1986.

Rev. Bro. C.C. Paul took over as Director and Principal in 1989. Data Preparation and Computer Software (DPCS) trade was added the same year. Co-education was introduced in select trades such as DPCS, Draughtsman Civil and Electronics Mechanic.

Rev. Bro. Albert Selvaraj took over as Director and Principal once again in 1991. In 1993, Rev. Bro. P.C. Abraham took over as Director and Principal for a short while.

Rev. Bro. George Padikara took over as Director and Principal in 1993. The DPCS trade was replaced with Computer Operator and Programming Assistant (COPA). It was during this time that the institute has the maximum number of trainees.

Rev. Bro. Lawrence Gabriel took over as the Director and Rev. Bro. Joseph Thomas took over as the Principal in 1999. The institution saw many changes during this period. A few new machines were bought for the Turner and Machinist trades, TIG Welding and MIG Welding machines were added to the Welder trade. CNC Machining was introduced and some of the less favored trades were closed down. Electricina trade was added in 2002.

Another new development during this period was the starting of a new academic school in the same campus. The new school was inaugurated on 10th June 2002. Rev. Bro. Geroge Vazhayil was appointed as the first Principal of the academic school.

Rev. Bro. Jose Kannampuzha took over as Director and Principal of Montfort Technical Institute in 2004.

Rev. Bro. Oliver Ericatt took over as Director and Principal in 2007 and Rev. Bro. Jenny Kuriakose took over as Principal in 2008. The present Director and Principal is Rev. Bro. Jenny Kuriakose.

On 3rd December 2008, Montfortian Psychological Counseling and Educational Consultancy Centre, initiated by Rev. Bro. Thomas Velimattathil was inaugurated by Rev. Bro. Rene Delome, Superior general in Montfort Technical Institute campus.

In June 2009, Montfort Matriculation School was up graded to a Higher Secondary School.
